CHAPTER FOUR

Artistic Residence in Taiwan

For Janet Wolff, contemporary artworks are conditioned by the social codes in which they are elaborated.1 But what is the other side of the dynamics at work? How can particular modes of art practice influence and even affect those codes? Can residence schemes really produce an art for sociocultural change? These are the questions we shall attempt to answer in the context of Taiwan.

What better way to understand the nature of artistic residence than with on-site visits and conversations with locals, professionals and artists involved in the schemes? The viewpoints of official policy representatives and non-official actors are of course equally important; so are the locations (urban to rural), the funding systems, and the type of people managing the schemes (artists or other professionals). The six artists chosen for sharing their views had various experiences of working in residence through a wide range of media; they belonged to different generations, regions, genders, social classes, ethnic or cultural backgrounds (such as Han Chinese and aboriginal artists), and educational upbringing. Some of them studied in European art institutions for several years, some were educated as fine artists in Taiwan, and some were artists whose practices had more to do with folk art or self-taught art than anything else. In other words, the choice was representative of the variety of practicing artists in Taiwan. The working methods and media they used ranged from painting, sculpture and photography, to installations, conceptual art and performance, all intended for mass audiences or for intervening geographically or socially in specific communities.
